Finally… Upgraded to Canon

500D Actually last week, I bought this DSLR.
Rp. 8,120,000 from Oktagon, Gunung Sahari. (Datascript warranty) Got bonus tripod, blower, and 8gb SDHC.

I previously used 400D, and like the size of this series.
I hate to carry big bulk camera..
400D / 500D is perfect size!

My first impression is the ‘even-more’ user friendly of the interface. The LCD screen is bright and wide.
Fantastic!
With 15.1 MP, you really can produce wonderful quality pictures.

And surprisingly, it has ISO to 3200, which can expanded to 6400 and 12,800. Big WOW… really helpful for less-light shooting.

Had tried the video as well..
At first, experienced some problems in focusing, but at the end, it was great!!

Really can’t wait to explore this camera…

M-Pesa, a success Story from Kenya

This is one of my research findings as my role in mobile commerce. I’ve just posted it here in case somebody want to know about it :-) .

M-Pesa is one of Safaricom, leading operator in Kenya services. Its main advantage offered is transfer money thru mobile phone. M-Pesa is available for all Safaricom users, both post-paid and pre-paid subs. Currently indicated that M-Pesa already have 6.5 million users, which is half of total Safaricom subs. They have also reached 2million daily transaction, as we can see 30% of its users transact at lease one everyday. This is really something in mobile money industry.

Who is Safaricom?

It was formed in 1997 by Telkom Kenya, and had become a leader in the industry. The company employs 150 people and indicated to have 13.3 million users. In May 2000, Vodafone group Plc of the United Kingdom, the world’s 2nd largest telecommunication company, acquired a 40% stake of Safaricom. Vodafone is a British mobile network operator with international operation, and estimated to have 303 million customers in 25 markets across 5 continents. With its 40% shares on Safaricom, obviously they have significant role in management and plotting Kenya as their pilot project in mobile-money in emerge market.

They collaborated with Sagentia, an European company to develeop the platform, which later recognized as M-Pesa.

The Platform

Basically M-Pesa has a complete service of mobile-commerce; Deposit cash, withdraw money, transfer money, buy airtime, pay bills, account management, check balance, change M-Pesa Pin, change secret word, call customer care, change language, update Menu. You might be surprised to see this sophisticated services available in a country such Kenya. However, they have successfully made it as simple as it could and convenient by the users by involving third party as agents.

How to register

There are simply 3 steps to register to the service. 1) Replace your Old Safaricom SIM card (if necessary). 2) Register as new M-Pesa customer (can be done in Agents). 3) Activate your account thru UTK menu on mobile phone (upon the registration success). To activate itself is relatively easy. Just go to the M-Pesa menu, and select ‘activate’, you will be asked to key in start key (received by SMS from operator), create new PIN, and confirm your ID card. You also will be notified for “Secret Word” by SMS, which later will be used for verifying when you call customer care.

Agents

There are over 11,000 M-PESA agents countrywide with new outlets being added daily. M-PESA Agents register customers, and process cash deposits and withdrawals services to M-PESA customers. M-Pesa has create new business opportunities for agents as they also gain certain commission from financial transactions. M-Pesa Agents tasks are registers M-PESA customers, deposits cash into registered customers M-PESA accounts, processes cash withdrawals for registered M-PESA customers, processes cash withdrawals for non-registered M-PESA customers, educates customers, compliance with Safaricom AML & KYC Policy, compliance with Safaricom business Practices, branding of their outlets as per provided guidelines. M-PESA Agents include; Safaricom authorized dealers, operating one or more outlets around Kenya. Other retailers with a substantial distribution network like petrol stations, distributors, supermarkets and registered SMEs, and selected Banks and Micro-Finance Institutions.

P2P Money Transfer

What are so special with M-Pesa money transfer?

Well, basically it has enough simplicity to be used by all kind of people. What makes me surprise is we can also transfer money to Non-M-Pesa users.

To M-Pesa Registered users: Money sent to another registered users will be added to their account balance

To Non-MPesa registered users: If money is sent to non-registered users (including other network), M-Pesa sends them a one-time voucher that they will take to an Agent Shop. The agent enters the voucher code and the user’s phone number into the M-Pesa menu and send it to M-Pesa. M-Pesa system moves the amount represented by the voucher into Agent’s account and confirm to both agent and the user (that the equivalent amount of cash should be given to the user (recipient).

ATM Withdrawal

This is also interesting. They have “Card-less” ATM withdrawal. Here are the steps:

On your Phone: Choose ATM Withdrawal option from M-Pesa Menu, Enter the PesaPiunt agent code 555 555 (ATM Code), Enter M-Pesa PIN, An SMS with 6 digit authorization code will be received

Then, on ATM: Select M-Pesa option, Enter the authorization code on the ATM keyboard, Enter your mobile number and the withdrawal amount, The ATM will allow you to do cardless cash-out transaction, The ATM dispenses your cash and a receipt, and you will receive a notification from M-Pesa.

Summary

M-Pesa is one of success example of mobile money implementation. It has reach about half of total network users, and noted to have incredible daily transaction records (2 million transactions, about 30% of users on average transacts everyday).

A-lot-of advantages and conveniences offered by M-Pesa, Some of them are: Easy registration (not a bank account), No minimum balance, Money transfer to non-users, Agent assistances availability, Convenient withdrawal: cash out at agents and ATM withdrawal, Convenient UTK Menu and secure service with PIN and secret words, Reversible ability for wrong transfer (upon rigorous vetting of the sender and recipient and if the money has not yet been cashed or withdrawn).

M-Pesa has full mobile-money services and has enormous support from Vodafone (2nd largest operator in the world). The market characteristic and mobile phone penetration within the country support the service success.

Their main selling point of the service is P2P money transfer. Most Kenyans living in rural areas exist in abject poverty, most on less than a dollar a day, and have to rely financially on relatives in the cities. That is one fact that makes M-Pesa works.

The 90/10 Principle

A friend of mine sent me this slides.

It was about ‘the 90/10 principle’

By Stephen Covey

Gotta admit that it was really a great philosophy

Thank you for your great way of thinking, Mr. Covey!

The 90/10 Principle

10% of life is made up of what happens to you.

90% of life is decided by how you react

We have no control on 10% of what happen to us

But we determine the other 90%

How? By our reaction over the 10%

You cannot control a red light.

However, you can control your reaction.

Do not let people fool you.

YOU can control how you react.

A great example from Stephen Covey:

You are having breakfast with your family.

Your daughter knocks over a cup of coffee onto your business shirt.

You have no control over what has just happened.

What happens next will be determined by how you react.

You curse.

You harshly scold your daughter for knocking the cup over.

She breaks down in tears.

After scolding her, you turn to your wife and you criticize her for placing the cup too close to the edge of the table.

A short verbal battle follows.

You storm upstairs and change your shirt.

Back downstairs, you find your daughter has been too busy crying to finish her breakfast and getting ready to go to school.

She misses the bus.

Your spouse must leave immediately for work.

You rush to the car and drive your daughter to school.

Because you are late, you drive 40 miles per hour in a 30 mph speed limit zone.

After a 15-minute delay and throwing $60.00 traffic fine away, you arrive at school.

Your daughter runs into the building without saying goodbye.

After arriving at the office 20 minute late, you realize you forgot your briefcase.

Your day has started terrible. As it continues, it seems to get worse and worse.

You look forward to coming home.

When you arrive home, you find a small wedge in your relationship with your wife and daughter.

Why?

Because of how you reacted in the morning.

Why did you have a bad day?

A) Did the coffee cause it?

B) Did your daughter cause it?

C) Did the policeman cause it?

D) Did you cause it?

The answer is “D”

You had no control over what happened with the coffee.

How you reacted in those 5 seconds is what caused your bad day.

What if you react differently?

Here is what could have and should have happened.

Coffee splashes over you.

Your daughter is about to cry.

You gently say:

“It’s okay, honey, you just need to be more careful next time.”

Grabbing a towel you go upstairs and change your shirt.
You grab your briefcase, and you come back down in time to look through

the window and see your child getting on the bus.

She turns and waves. You arrive 5 minutes early a cheerfully greet the staff.

Notice the difference?

Two different scenarios.

Both started the same.

Both ended different.

Why?

Because of how you reacted.

You really have no control over 10% of what happens in your life.

The other 90% was determined by your reaction.

Here are some ways to apply the 90/10 Principle.

If someone says something negative about you, do not be a sponge.

Let the attack roll off like water on glass.

You do not have to let the negative comments affect you.

React properly and it will not ruin your day.

A wrong reaction could result in losing a friend, being fired, or getting stressed out.

How do you react if someone cuts you off in the traffic?

Do you lose your temper?

Pound on the steering wheel? (a friend of mine had the steering wheel fall off),

Do you curse? Does your blood pressure skyrocket?

Who cares if you arrive 10 seconds later at work?

Why let the cars ruin your drive?

Remember the 90/10 Principle and don’t worry about it.

You are told you lost your job.

Why lose sleep and get irritated?

It will work out.

Now you know the 90/10 Principle.

Apply it and you will be amazed at the results.

You will lose nothing if you try it.

The 90/10 Principle is incredible.

Very few know and apply this Principle.

The result?

You will see it by yourself!

Millions of people are suffering

from undeserved stress,

trials, problems and headaches.

We all must understand and apply the 90/10 Principle.

It can change your life!

It only takes willpower to give ourselves permission to make the experience.

~ The 90/10 Principles by Stephen Covey

human race

Mom, Dad told me human race evolved from monkey.

Why different from ur story?

Well, that was his side, mine still Adam and Eve
